SkyParlour takes on America: Part 1
Thursday 28 February 2013

We’re halfway through our whistle stop business tour of the east coast and so far we’ve had two action packed weeks meeting with noted journalists, clients and industry figures.

After settling into our NYC apartment, and surviving the biggest snow storm of the decade, we caught the train to Boston to meet with Will Hernandez, Editor of Payments Journal, and Bill McBeath, Chief Research Officer at ChainLink Research. After spending some time delving into industry trends for the coming year and exploring how vendors can find a voice amongst retailers, we were back on the train.

Wednesday evening saw us attend the (ISC)2 New York Metro February 2013 Meeting, which included presentations from Cisco and Protiviti. Topics of the day included the importance of industry collaboration to maintain the integrity of the internet, how to help businesses with the compliance process and general IT security.

Our next adventure was a hop out of Manhattan to the collegiate town of Madison NJ to meet with Evan Schuman, Editor of StoreFront BackTalk. Over our first US pizza we discussed how to dig out the big ‘surprise’ in any story. A quick tour of the town and we were back to the city to meet with Sherry Seetram, founder of Epay consulting, to share our industry experiences and predictions, particularly around the PCI standards.

The next week and we were joined by Kevin Ptak from Mako Networks for two days of strategy planning and messaging ready to kick off 2013 with some exciting campaigns. Our next journalist meetings were with Bryan Yurcan, Associate Editor at Bank Systems and Technology, and Dan Kaplan Executive Editor at SC Magazine. Both gave us more great insight to the US media landscape and topics of interest for the year in the banking and security sectors.

Thursday came, the sun was shining, and we yet again boarded the train. This time we made the trip to Washington DC to meet Jason Oxman, CEO of the ETA. Over lunch we discussed the annual ETA conference, Europe as an area of interest and the organisation’s upcoming event plans, followed by a brisk but beautiful tour of Washington’s many monuments.

Our final meeting of the week was with Ella Nevill, Marketing Director at the PCI Council. We spent time talking about the council’s focuses for 2013, and particularly how to help Level 4 merchants with communication and compliance. We’ll be looking forward to bumping into each other at the ETA in April.

Next stop, the Windy City…
